27/04/2023 - Week 4 Joey Lok Wai San / 0350857 Digital Photography and Imaging / Bachelor of Design (Hons) in Creative Media Week 4 Blog
In this week's lecture, we learned about adjustment layers and filters in Adobe Photoshop. (Unfortunately, I was sick and not able to make it to this week's class but this is what I know of it.)

1) Adjustment Layers
Adjustments layers is a non-destructive image editing tool that adds color and tonal adjustments to an image without permanently changing its pixels.
Brightness & Contrast
- Adjusts the tonal range
- Brightness slider is for adjusting highlights
- Contrast slider is for adjusting shadows
Level
- Modify the tonal values
- Adjusts the levels of shadows, mid-tones, and highlights
Curves
- Adjusts the entire tonal range of an image
Exposure
- Adjusts exposure levels with three sliders: Exposure, Offset, Gamma
Selective Colour
- Selectively modifies the amount of a primary color without modifying the other primary colors
2) Filters
Using filters to edit photos is an essential element of Adobe’s graphics editor. There are filters to change color, add blur or create completely new image effects.
Mr. Fauzi showed us the icons and functions of the adjustment layers and filters. We watched these video tutorials to become familiar with how to use important tools in Adobe Photoshop.

In this week’s practical class, Mr. Fauzi helped us to select the best composition from our task. We are required to use our knowledge of adjustment layers and filters and improve our digital collage. My initial composition from Week 3 already had some adjustment layers. Some of the filters I used were the invert filter, hue, and saturation, etc. For this week’s practical I edited my digital collage with more adjustments such as levels, curves, and contrast and tried out different filters. This exercise has taught me a lot about Adobe Photoshop (such as the marquee selection tool, pen tool, lasso tool, magic wand tool, layers, adjustment layers, filters, etc.) and composition.
Initial Adjuments:
I thought the colours were too intense with these two adjustments and the filters looked too obvious. It also didn’t look like it was ‘in space’ enough. Thus, I inverted one of the photos provided and added it on top, to darken the space sky.
