INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 2: MyTIGER Illustration Poster

In Project 2, we have to illustrate a poster and submit our work to Maybank Foundation MyTIGER Values Art Competition 2023. We have to create a poster using Adobe Illustrator that interprets the project aims through Maybank TIGER's core values.

1. Topic Research

Maybank TIGER's core values are Teamwork, Integrity, Growth, Excellence & Efficiency, and Relationship Building. In support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - a collection of global goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all” by 2030 - Maybank’s MyTIGER will focus on 12 of the 17 goals.
  1. No Poverty - End poverty in all its forms everywhere
  2. Zero Hunger - End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture
  3. Good Health and Well-being - Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
  4. Quality Education - Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all
  5. Clean Water and Sanitation - Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
  6. Affordable and Clean Energy - Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
  7. Decent Work and Economic Growth - Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all
  8. Sustainable Cities and Communities - Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
  9. Responsible Consumption and Production - Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
  10. Climate Action - Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
  11. Life Below Water - Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development
  12. Life on Land - Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and stop biodiversity loss

Life On Land

Fig. 2.1 Life On Land, Week 6

The overall gist of this goal is to conserve life on land. According to the United Nations, it aims to restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss. Human activities have profoundly altered most terrestrial ecosystems: around 40,000 species are documented to be at risk of extinction over the coming decades, and 10 million hectares of forest are being destroyed each year, leading to many species losing their habitats. (The Global Goals, 2023)

Fig. 2.2 Life On Land Targets, Week 6

Target 15.1: Conserve and restore terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems Target 15.2: End deforestation and restore degraded forests Target 15.3: End desertification and restore degraded land Target 15.4: Ensure conservation of mountain ecosystems Target 15.5: Protect biodiversity and natural habitats Target 15.6: Promote access to genetic resources and fair sharing of the benefits Target 15.7: Eliminate poaching and trafficking of protected species Target 15.8: Prevent invasive alien species on land and in water ecosystems Target 15.9: Integrate ecosystem and biodiversity in governmental planning These are the main targets I have decided to focus on: TARGET 15.2 END DEFORESTATION AND RESTORE DEGRADED FORESTS By 2020, promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally. TARGET 15.5 PROTECT BIODIVERSITY AND NATURAL HABITATS Take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt the loss of biodiversity and, by 2020, protect and prevent the extinction of threatened species. Log/Tag Line(s)

“If you can't build a home, don't destroy one.” “Don't strip the stripes from the scenery” 2. Visual References

Fig. 2.3 Visual Reference #1, Week 7

An illustration of a polluted river dividing a city landscape and nature. I plan to use this concept in my design illustration.

Fig. 2.4 Visual Reference #2, Week 7

The world is in flames and destroyed, but in contrast, the human and animals are protected in this bubble. The colour contrast between nature versus mankind is really interesting.

Fig. 2.5 Visual Reference #3, Week 7

This artwork shows the problems of today, with a grey and polluted world. The zombie humans are surrounding the small land of nature, trying to take it over. Illustration by Gunduz Agayev.

Fig. 2.6 Visual Reference #4, Week 7

In this illustration, a girl is being fenced from pollution and destruction. She is unable to do anything but watch as the events unfold. I plan to include this concept of a tiger unable to do anything to protect it's home from deforestation.

Fig. 2.7 Visual Reference #5, Week 7

Humans are being tempted and full of greed to take what is in front of them. Despite having more than enough - carrying a full bag of meat. Illustration poster by Wenjia Tang.

3. Sketches

These are my initial ideas and sketches for my design.

Idea and Sketch #1

Fig. 2.8 Idea and Sketch #1, Week 7

My idea is the hypocrisy of how Malaysia crowns the Malayan tiger as their national animal and yet takes away their habitat, making it one of the most endangered species in the world. The Malayan tiger is a symbol of strength and bravery among Malaysians, even being noted as the country's national animal - represented in emblems of the Royal Malaysian Police, national football team and the Jata Negara. Yet poaching of these endangered species is relentless and the country has lost many of their wild tigers. The Malayan tiger is a critically endangered species, at a real risk of extinction.

Idea and Sketch #2

Fig. 2.9 Idea and Sketch #2, Week 7
My second idea is about flora and fauna against pollution and climate change. Humans, animals and other living things must work together to fight against the effects of climate change. I liked the idea, I even went as far as colouring and digitizing it out. However, after many attempts I realized it was too difficult to conceptualize climate change as an object and make it seem as though they are fighting against each other. Idea and Sketch #3

Fig. 2.10 Idea and Sketch #3, Week 7

My third idea is similar to the previous one of flora fauna and humans fighting against pollution and climate change. Idea and Sketch #4
Fig. 2.11 Idea and Sketch #4, Week 7

This idea is about humans working together to roll out a log of grass which takes over the deforested and polluted land and restore the forest. It showcases the TIGER values of teamwork. Idea and Sketch #5
Fig. 2.12 Idea and Sketch #5, Week 7

My final idea is a tiger longing for its home. I want to use the idea of a colourful nature that gets deforested and is now taken over by a dull, polluted landscape. The concept is how humans have taken away many habitats and, and has left the tiger and many wildlife without a home. Humans must work together as a team to spread awareness to safeguard wildlife and their habitats. 4. Digitization

Fig. 2.13 Digitizing City Landscape, Week 8

Fig. 2.14 Digitizing Grass, Week 8

I learned to create grass in Illustrator via YouTube tutorials. The first image is a more graphic-looking grass, made using lines. For the more realistic-looking patch of grass, I duplicated the circle shape to form a rectangle and add effects such as roughen and gradient.

Fig. 2.15 Adding Grass and Laying Out the Sketch, Week 8

Fig. 2.16 Foreground and Tiger, Week 8

The design looked too plain and simple, so I added a foreground of forest trees to make it look like the tiger is afraid to leave its forest habitat. However, I was not happy with how it looked and decided to change the orientation from vertical to landscape and play around with the layout.

Fig. 2.19 New Layout #2, Week 8

Fig. 2.20 New Layout #3, Week 8
After trying out a few different layouts, I was still not satisfied with it. All of the design looks good to me, but it does not convey the message I want it to. Even if it did, the message would not be received immediately or clearly. There were still lots of elements missing but those wouldn't tie the piece together.

5. Digitization (Reworked)

Instead of throwing out my entire work,
I decided to digitize Sketch #5 using some of the elements I already digitized for Sketch #4.
What I liked from the experimentation layouts?
- Contrast between nature vs polluted landscape
- Foreground and background

Fig. 3.1 Background Design, Week 9

I used the city I had digitized in Fig. 2.13 and improved on it. I adjusted it to give it a more muted tone with lots of smoke in the air. I used the degraded land and added hills as the foreground.

Fig. 3.2 Developing Progress, Week 9
I darkened the sky and added the Polaroid frame. I also added details of chopped trees due to deforestation.

Fig. 3.5 Polaroid Outline View, Week 9
I used the elements I digitized from my previous layouts to create the polaroid. I created the sunset sky using the gradient tool and added lighting and shadows for the tiger.

Before achieving my final piece, I added rays of sunlight coming through the forest in the Polaroid. I adjusted the lighting of the design and added some finishing details.

Final MyTIGER Illustration Poster
Title: "Once A Home"
“If you can't build a home, don't destroy one”. This artwork depicts a tiger longing for its home. What was once a colourful forest, home to many wildlife, is now taken over by grey skies, degraded land, chopped trees, buildings, etc. We, humans, have taken away the tiger’s home. Deforestation and overdevelopment have severely destroyed habitats and biodiversity. Humans need to work together to spread awareness to safeguard the wildlife and their habitats. With these actions, the UNSDG 15 - Life On Land can be met. We must protect the remaining colourful landscapes of nature by putting an end to deforestation. We must protect the homes of tigers and other wildlife before it is too late.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 6

Ms Noranis said the idea from the progression check is good, however, do not include anything violent. The tiger is the logo/mascot of Maybank, putting them in harm's way can send the wrong message.

WEEK 8

Mr Hafiz said the idea is nice. Removing the tiger paw is good.

REFLECTION

Experience

This was a more enjoyable task than the first project because I had some basic knowledge of how to use Adobe Illustrator. I learned how to use and adjust gradients to create a lighting effect and how to divide my work into different layers. I also learnt that not all ideas and sketches will digitize nicely and that other elements need to be considered. It was difficult to choose an idea that I liked that will translate well when digitized. Compared to the first exercise, I do not hate Illustrator as much anymore, but I still very much have a grudge to hold against it.

Observations

From this task, I have observed that neatly sketching out a design is incredibly important. Everything should be detailed when sketched out, so there is a layout to digitize. I also observed that not everything I learned from the lectures can be applied to every design. For example, I tried to use the 3D and Materials effect in my piece. Not only did my computer crash, it looked like a mess and very out of place for a graphical piece.

Findings

I found that creating a design with lots of composition elements such as foreground, midground and background can be quite challenging. In theory, it looks very simple to do, but when you digitize it, you have to consider the layers behind it. I also found that there are lots of tools in Illustrator that I am still yet to be familiar with. I learned about many new tools via video tutorials, and how some tools can create very interesting effects, but there is still more to discover.
