PROJECT 2: Shooting Practise & Editing
Project 2A: Production Shoot
In this project, we were tasked to shoot as a group
and edit individually. The class was divided into
groups to shoot as a production team; Team B will
shoot according to a Netflix series called "Beef" and
Team S to a Japanese drama called "Silent". I am in
Team B.

Production
Pre-Production
I was assigned the art director role, which
focuses on the pre-production aspect of the
shoot. We had to find the costumes, props and
shooting location and send them to the
director for approval.

Production
We had our shooting on September 26, 2023
(Week 5). Here are some exclusive, never
seen before behind-the-scenes
photos:
The videos and audio were then shared with the group for editing.

(26/09/2023)
We followed the plan on the storyboard of
which scene we would shoot first. The
actors arrived with their costumes, and
the props were prepped by Wan Qing and me.
We decorated the sets before the scene was
filmed in order to save time, especially
Sc1 Sh1 which required lots of background
props. The videos and audio were then shared with the group for editing.

Post Production
Before I started editing in Premiere Pro, I reviewed and listened to the recorded video and audio clips. I renamed everything in accordance with the scenes and shots as well as synced the audio with the video by following the tutorial below:
Fig. 3.3 Auto Sync Audio with Video, Week 5 (29/09/2023)
Following the storyline I created, I edited the videos and audios. I began by arranging the clips according to the sequence of the dialogue, breaking the video and audio up where I felt it was necessary, and adding text afterwards.
As seen in Fig. 3.5 above, I layered three different clips on top of each other, then cropped and cut each of them to get the split screen effect. The shots are split equally with the help of the guides.

The assembly editing took a lot of time, but here is the initial draft:
As instructed to not follow the
order of the storyboard, I tried
something different and created my
own storyline. It was challenging
to develop a proper storyline that
made sense with the scenes
provided. I went through a
drafting stage where I rearranged
scenes and omitted some lines to
get a plot I liked. I made the
decision to cut dialogues halfway
and not sync all of the lines from
the actors and actresses, opting
instead to have some overlap over
some footage to give it a more
trailer-style feel.
The length of a trailer is usually around or more than 2 minutes. The amount of footage was insufficient to make a full trailer, which resulted in my creating a teaser trailer, which is around 20-30 seconds.

I then placed the video and audio on the
timeline according to the storyboard,
later editing it to my own style. I
denoised the background noise and
dereverb whichever audio clip needed it.

The assembly editing took a lot of time, but here is the initial draft:

According to research on teaser
structures, the background music
typically begins subtly and
gradually develops to its climax
within 30 seconds. The ambience of
the video was greatly enhanced by
finding some copyright-free trailer
music from YouTube. I looked at a
few before settling on the best one,
which I then used to sync the edited
video clips to the beats of the
music. At first, I mixed two
background music together; while
this increased the drama, there was
also too much going on.

Colour Correction (Week 6)
In week 6, we learned about colour
correction and colour grading.
- Colour Correction: Correcting (or fixing) the colour to balance and get natural/normal-looking colours
- Colour Grading: Grading (or editing) colour to give the video a stylistic and create a visual tone.
Fig. 4.2 Colour Corrected Video, Week 6 (06/10/2023)
I used Lumitri Colours to colour grade
the video, following a dark
yellow/green theme since those colours
represent betrayal. This was the
initial edited video with colour
correction and grading before
receiving feedback on Week 7.

After feedback was given, I adjusted
the brightness and decreased the
highlights, making the whole thing
just void of any light.

Project 2B: Insta/TikTok Video
In the second part of this project, we were
tasked to film a TikTok video with the
creative freedom to film anything we
wanted.

Pre-Production
Pre-Production
I started by writing down ideas in the
Google Slides template provided which
served as a proposal for this project. In
this presentation slide, we had to include
the following:
- Self-Titled: The title or name of our project.
- Description: A description or overview of the project's content, theme, and concept.
- Music: Information about the music or audio that would be used in the project.
- Moodboard: Visual elements, images, or illustrations that capture the intended mood, style, or atmosphere of the project.
- Visual References: References to visuals or styles that inspire or influence the project's look and feel.
- Storyboard: A sequence of visual or textual representations outlining the key scenes and shots of the project.
Fig. 5.2 Insta/TikTok Video Treatment,
Week 8 (17/10/2023)
I had one too many ideas, mostly due to
the fact I did not know which was better
or which I preferred more. I ended up
filming TWICE, yes that's right TWICE.
Finally, I came up with the idea "The Art Block - Inspired by Wes Anderson"- Inspired by Wes Anderson’s filmography and the TikTok trend that follows suit, it features myself trying to find inspiration in normal everyday things and editing to look as cinematic as Wes Anderson’s films. This video acts as an inspiration to overcome art block, which is a period of time when an artist has no ideas for new work.
Fig. 5.3 Initial Idea and Storyboard,
Week 8 (20/10/2023)
My initial idea was a spoof of a Wes
Anderson movie, "My Life as a Lactose
Intolerant Person - Wes Anderson style"
- Inspired by Wes Anderson’s filmography
and the TikTok trend, features regular
everyday events but is edited to look
cinematic as Wes Anderson’s films. I
want to add humor to this concept and
express myself more which is why I
decided to poke fun at my lactose
intolerance. However, I did not like
that idea after filming it, which made
me redo everything.

Fig. 5.5 Pre-Production Planning,
Week 8 (20/10/2023)
I created the storyboard for my short
video organizing them into scenes and shots,
camera angles etc. Once the planning
stage was done, I started filming with
my phone and the tripod according to
the storyboard.
Production
Post-Production
Editing and Assembling
During the production part, I had to film some of the scenes
multiple times due to various
reasons e.g. camera angle,
out-of-focus shot, inconsistent
natural lighting etc. I also
decided to shoot in the middle
of the day when there were fewer
to no people outside (which
makes sense why there is no one around because who wants to
get toasted in the sun? Me and
my burnt skin obviously).

Shooting, Week 9 (24/10/2023)
Post-Production
Before editing in Premiere Pro, I viewed the recorded video and renamed everything according to the scenes and shots.
Editing and Assembling
Fig. 6.4 Arranging the Video
Clips, Week 9 (25/10/2023)
While Wes Anderson's style is very centred and symmetrical, I took my own creative liberty by adjusting the shots following the rule of thirds.

Colour
Correction
Once the clips were done being assembled and edited, I went to colour-correct each scene to make them look similar. I adjusted nearly everything such as contrast, temperature, exposure, brightness, etc., especially focusing on the darker scenes. As shown below, before colour correction, the lighting was very harsh and did not have the "moody" atmosphere I wanted, I adjusted the brightness and exposure to get a darker look as if the shot was taken at night.

Next, I added the background music I
chose "Obituary" by Alexandre Desplat, which is used in the Wes Anderson TikTok trend. I matched the edited clips to the rhythm and beats of the music. I also added some sound effects for dramatic effect.
Effects and Transitions
I layered three different clips on top of each other, then cropped and cut each of them to get the split screen effect. Wes Anderson also frequently uses the whip-pan effect, I followed this YouTube tutorial to learn to add this transition to my videos.

FEEDBACK
WEEK 7
The production shoot edit is too bright, especially the highlight.
WEEK 8
Idea 1 of Insta/TikTok is good. It depends on the execution of filming and editing.
WEEK 9
Be aware of the night scene - do not shoot it totally dark. You will need a table lamp or ring light, or shoot evening for a night scene and tune down the exposure in post.

REFLECTION
Project 2A: Production Shoot
Project 2B: Insta/TikTok
Experience
My experience with the first part of this project was very educational and eye-opening. I have always wanted to know what it was like working on an actual production shoot; while it is not as glorified as I thought it would be, it's still an amazing experience. The experience of watching the video develop from the start (pre-production) to being filmed (production), to the end (post-production) unfold was very satisfying and rewarding to see all the hard work come together.
Observations
Throughout this project, I observed that this project requires teamwork, cooperation and good leadership. A large-scale project like this has multiple stages which means everyone has to work together or there will be a ton of miscommunication in terms of technicality and vision.
Findings
I found that detailed planning is essential when it comes to filming to get the desired visual as well as to avoid wasting time during the production stage. In terms of post-production, I found the choice of background music sets the tone of the entire video, making syncing the rhythm to the video clips critically important. This is also true for the colour choice as colour is an important element that sets the emotion and mood of the entire video.

Project 2B: Insta/TikTok
Experience
My experience in the second half of this project was not as great, in fact, it felt like a disaster to me. Filming a video of myself was really challenging, especially with the huge transition from having a whole team with professional equipment to film to just a one-person production. Other than that, this was a new experience which I never thought I would ever be doing - I don't even have TikTok so this was completely unexpected.
Observations
I observed that there are many different ways to film by ourselves. While some techniques are more complex than others, it is possible to film alone. I also observed myself going out of my comfort zone and filming myself, which is something different.
Findings
I found that practising the techniques learnt in class for this project has helped me get more familiar with using the software. While what is learnt in class is just the basics, once you have gotten the hang of them, you can build on that skill set. For example, I watched tutorials to learn how to add transitions and improve colour correction.
