FINAL PROJECT: Animated Infographic
Research the given topic in your group and break down the information into parts - narrative and visualization to educate the viewers about the issue.
Use questions ‘What, why, where, when, who, and how’ into the building of your narrative before transferring the information onto your storyboard. Use relevant visuals to create associations of information to the infographics. Refer to the chart here to decide how to visualize.
Expected outcomes:
- An animated infographic informing the audience about a given topic (min 1.5 - max 3 min video)
- Must include some form of data/statistics.
- Must use the questioning technique and provide answers.Grouping and Tasks

Research on Cyberbullying
We started our assignment by doing some general research on the topic of "The Impact of Social Media on Society". Since the topic of social media is very broad, we made the decision to narrow it down to a few subtopics we could focus on.
After a group vote, we decided to focus our topic specifically on: "The Impact of Social Media on Cyberbullying" - to examine how social media platforms facilitate cyberbullying, harassment, and online abuse, leading to detrimental effects on victims' mental health.
We compiled our information research about cyberbullying and how it relates to social media in a document.
Fig. 1.3 Research on Cyberbullying - PDF, Week 3 (19/02/2024)
Before creating a storyboard, we first wrote the storyline and the script for our animation.
We tried to make our script as detailed as possible to get a better grasp of the content of our video. This planning also assisted us down the line when creating assets and animation.
Storyline
The story begins with a girl taking a selfie to share on social media. Pleased with the photo, she uploads it to her preferred platform. However, her joy is short-lived as she receives hurtful comments about her appearance. Obsessively, she repeatedly checks for new comments, even during breaks and before going to bed. These comments weigh heavily on her mind as she takes them personally, reflected in her changed behaviour of dressing in loose clothing to hide herself. One day, she discovers a post mentioning her with more negative comments attached. This exacerbates her inner turmoil, leading to sleepless nights filled with tears and despair. In an attempt to find solace, she decides to disconnect from the online world entirely. With time and self-reflection, she begins to heal. Upon returning to the internet, she encounters the same hurtful comments, but now they no longer have power over her. Confident in herself, she realizes that others' opinions hold no sway over her, embracing her identity as a strong, resilient individual.
Script Breakdown and Visual Suggestion
The script is based on the information and statistics we gathered from our research, which we then broke down into sections scene by scene. We then discussed and thought of the visuals for each scene.
Fig. 1.4 Initial Script Draft, Week 4 (29/02/2024)
We did a voiceover recording to time the duration of the script. Our initial script was far too lengthy - it was more than four minutes long. We made some cuts and edits to our writing to fit the time limit.

Storyboard, Visual Style, Color Scheme
We compiled all the information, visuals, storyboard, script and more into the slide. This ensures that every aspect of the project is organized in one place and easily accessible for references.

Moodboard
These are some infographics on the topic of cyberbullying. The majority of them use lots of blue, orange and red colours.

Colour Pallete

Fig. 2.4 Colour Palette, Week 5 (07/03/2024)
Blue signifies trust, reliability, and responsibility. It elicits important emotions like calmness, peace, stability, and harmony. It’s one of the most liked colours, and is seen on a lot of websites and social networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn
The colour orange is also used to promote anti-bullying. It is a tangible representation of the supportive, universal message that our society wants to prevent bullying, and is united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.
Font Choice
We then proceeded to select the typeface, font colour, and background colour.
- Main heading: Berlin Sans FB Demi (Bold)
- Subheading: Arial (Bold)
- Newspaper: Times New Roman (Bold, Normal)
Storyboard
Animatic of Cyberbullying
We were tasked to create an animatic, which is a string of storyboard sketches edited together with sound to illustrate how a sequence will flow in motion. Wan Qing and Han drew and animated the sketches for each scene. I combined both their parts together with the voice-over from Adriena and added some background music.
Wan Qing sketched out the storyboard based on the script information and visual suggestions. Initially, the storyboard focused heavily on the animation with a storyline. However, Mr. Shamsul encouraged us to include more statistics such as graphs or charts to convey the data more effectively.

Mr. Shamsul suggested we make some changes and add more assets. After which, we can start animating our assets.

Illustration - Assets
While the animatic was being developed, Adriena and Vanessa started illustrations of characters, props, backgrounds and other necessary assets based on the storyboard and script. This was all done using Adobe Illustrator.
Character Design
This is the character design which was sketched out as a draft in class. Once the design and facial expressions were finalized, it was traced and illustrated in Adobe Illustrator.
Hair Design
We wanted her hair to be orange to match the colour palette and have a stark contrast with the blue background.

Fig. 3.3.3 Illustration Progress - Hair, Week 4 (29/02/2024)
Facial Expressions Design
These are illustrations of a variety of facial expressions that can be changed later on when animating. The main expressions are based on the scene's required emotion, as proposed by the script and visual suggestions.
Outfit Design
The dress is a simple collared straight dress. The initial colour choice was red, but it clashes with the orange hair a bit too much. We then tried a teal and green colour against the blue background and chose green in the end.
Influencer Character
The "influencer" character has a slightly different design compared to the main character. She has a different hairstyle and colour, with a more slim and curvy figure fitted with a revealing outfit. This design reflects the stereotypical style adorned by influencers on social media.
Side Characters
Other Assets Design
Adobe Illustrator to After Effects
Once the illustration was done, it was all imported into our shared Google Drive folder and sent to the animators. The Google Drive holds all our assets, animated scenes, audio, research, etc.
Wan Qing and Han separated each asset into different layers in Adobe Illustrator. This allows each element to be animated individually. The Illustrator file was then imported as a composition (layer size) for each scene in After Effects.

Animation - After Effects
Instead of simply fading in and out the entire text, they used a 'typing out' effect by adding animation to the text and adjusting the values accordingly. To ensure it is synced with the voiceover duration, the duration of the animations was adjusted to match the voiceover length.
These are the animations with voiceover that were done in two parts. There are also a few other clips that were animated separately and added in later on when video editing. They will all be combined together in Premiere Pro to form the full animation.
Video Editing - Premiere Pro
The title slide in the first half of the video seemed to be a duller shade of blue than in the second. In order to resolve this issue, I used a Premiere Pro video effect "Change to Colour". This was fairly easy to do since it was just one blank colour.

Fig. 6.3 Video Editing Progress - During Colour Change, Week 7 (20/03/2024)
I did the same "Change to Colour" effect for a few scenes as well to make it a deeper shade of blue. When there is more than one colour to select, I adjust the hue, lightness, saturation and softness.

Fig. 6.5 Video Editing Progress - Colour Change, Week 7 (20/03/2024)
I also created the rolling credits at the end. I created a new text layer and filled it with all the details and credits. I formatted a bit before selecting the "Roll" option from the "Essential Graphics" menu.

Audio Editing - Premiere Pro
Voice Over
Adriena recorded the voiceover for the animation which was around three minutes long. My work was made a lot easier because the animation and voiceover were already in sync. To make the voice consistent throughout both parts, I removed the synced voiceover from the animation and used the original recording in its own audio track.
Fig. 7.1 Final Voice Over by Adriena, Week 7 (20/03/2024)
When listening to the voiceover at full volume, I noticed there was some background static/ white noise. To remove this, I went to Window > Effects. Choose the audio clip, then double-click Audio Effects > Noise Reduction/Restoration > DeNoise. Select Edit to open Effect Controls. From there you can adjust the reduction.
Sound Effects
I searched for sound effects that would best match the animation. For sound effects that I couldn't find, I would find similar sounds and use Premiere Pro to modify the audio. I gathered all my sound effects from https://pixabay.com/ and https://freesound.org/ and put them into Premiere Pro.
Some sound effects must be played repeatedly, such as swiping the social media icons. To do this, I first cut the music, then repeated it again in time to match the object's appearance. For other repetitive audio such as the phone pinging with comments, I found an audio that played multiple notifications sound at once.

Fig. 7.4 Audio Editing Progress - Repetitive Sound Effects, Week 7 (20/03/2024)
I discovered that some sound effects could make a moment sound more daunting and emphasise a particular feeling. To help convey the girl's feelings better, I also include some audio samples of her sobbing and making scared noises.
Background Music
I added audio effects like "constant gain" and "constant fade" to the background music to create a seamless transition from the start to the end of the audio.
Other side characters include the main character's parents, counsellors, and friends. They are all made using a similar art style to ensure consistency.
Other Assets Design
These are illustrations of meditation and yoga poses to convey that these activities can be used as coping methods for mental health issues, specifically cyberbullying. For the hobbies mentioned in the script, there are books and a cup of tea to suggest that a hobby can be as simple as reading a book and drinking tea.
In the script, the main character feels self-conscious about her appearance when she looks in the mirror because of the comments from cyberbullying. To visualize this, we altered her expression and changed her clothes to something baggier that covered her entire figure.

Fig. 3.6.4 Illustration Progress - Phone and Phone Stand, Week 4 (01/03/2024)
These illustrations of the phone and phone stand, along with the characters' Instagram posts. Adriena and Vanessa designed these, as well as other assets, to reflect the visual suggestions from the script and to better show the actions.

Background Design
The backgrounds are focused on the blue-orange colour palette, which I achieved by applying colours and filters. By using simple shapes and the pen tool, I tried to keep a consistent art style across the background illustrations.

Video Editing - Premiere Pro
In Premiere Pro, I combined the two animated parts together. A notable editing I did involved taking the entire first half of the animation and reversing it. I added a black and white filter as well as sped up the clip to show the effect was time reversing. This was done to show the main character's life before encountering cyberbullying and hate messages.
The title slide in the first half of the video seemed to be a duller shade of blue than in the second. In order to resolve this issue, I used a Premiere Pro video effect "Change to Colour". This was fairly easy to do since it was just one blank colour.
- Open the Effects panel, enter "Change to Colour" in the search field, and drag the "Change to Colour" effect to the clip.
- In the "Change to Colour" section, use the "From" eyedropper to sample the colour you want to replace. The colour changes to red by default.
- Click the "To" colour chip and choose a new target colour.

Background Music
I wanted to use background music that wasn't too intense or loud which would take over from the voiceover. I searched for a more mellow yet lively background music that would reflect the tone of the animation's message. The music I found on YouTube is from "last drm" - Last Day of Summer.
I added audio effects like "constant gain" and "constant fade" to the background music to create a seamless transition from the start to the end of the audio.
After Feedback (Week 7)
During Week 7, our group presented the edited animated infographic to Mr. Shamsul. He gave us a few suggestions to improve on some scenes, visuals and graphs. We made the necessary changes and adjustments in animating and editing and added more assets based on the feedback received.

FEEDBACK
WEEK 4
WEEK 3
Can use a simple character rather than a complicated one for the animation topic. An example is Mr. Clippy from Microsoft.
Include statistics like graphs, bar charts, etc. in the video to further prove the research data
WEEK 5Remain a consistent design for all the assets. Make sure that all of the assets have the same art direction and style; for example, if the main character does not have outline strokes, don't put them on the other assets either. Next week, have an animatic video prepared with background music, sound effects, voiceover, etc.
WEEK 7
WEEK 6
- Can add more illustrations to further visualize the points that the voiceover is explaining. Can even add pop-up subtitles for certain points
- Don't let the animation pause on a scene for too long
- For the sensitive scene showing self-harm and suicide, we can use statistics to show the context or use newspaper cuttings

REFLECTION
Experience
This project is quite a whirlwind. It's definitely not my favourite project out of the whole module but it is still a fun one. I'm very grateful for my team members because without them this would be one hell of a project. Working in groups hasn't always been the best because I usually end up doing the majority of the work. In this project, however, everyone has been really helpful and did their part of the work.
Observation
I observed that it takes a lot of time to make an animated infographic. Not only time but also a lot of skill sets. You have to be able to research the content, plan out a storyline including the research you did, as well as illustrate, animate and edit. I am very appreciative of my group mates for saving my sanity and extending my life span - because if I had to animate 3 minutes of this alone, I would actually die.
Findings
Throughout this project, I found that the script and planning phase of the project is extremely important. It gives us a clear direction of our storyline and our storyboard, which in turn is important for the overall animation. It also gives us the details we need to create the animation, including the assets required to match the lines being said, the actions, and the suggested visuals.
