REFLECTION

Experience

Advanced Typography is a continuation of Typography, which helps us apply what we learned in the previous semester to now. I was quite excited to take this module because Typography was one of my favourite modules last semester. Advanced Typography allows us to have more freedom of creativity and to be more expressive. My favorite task would have to be Task 2, since we got the experience of creating our own personal brand. This is followed by Task 1 where we got to learn the basics of the typographic systems, which I enjoyed creating layouts for. Finally, Task 3 required us to create an entire typeface and that seemed incredibly daunting. It was a very long and tedious process and I have to acknowledge there is still a lot of room for improvement. Throughout all the tasks, there were quite a few challenges but these challenges helped me to improve upon myself. For example, the workload is a lot heavier compared to Typography, and I had to learn how to balance my time with my other modules. This module has taught me a lot that can be applied to a variety of areas in design and life.

Observations
Throughout this module, I observed the importance of doing visual research before proceeding with the tasks. It is important to pay attention to details when designing because even the smallest details can make a design that much more significant. For example, in the exercise Type and Play, by adding in the little dips and curves of purple cabbage, the design matches the source material a lot better. I also observed that making progress every week is important to keep on track as well as gather feedback from Mr. Vinod. Both the general and specific feedback are very helpful when doing our own designs and improving them.

Findings
I found that all these tasks have provided me with the opportunity to learn something new and grow. For instance, Task 1 taught me the basics of layout in typography and how that can be influential and important later down the line in our other tasks and modules. In Task 2, I found that creating our own brand identity takes a lot of work and it must be something that represents us and our values. I have also learned the importance of choosing the right collaterals and not just using whichever one we like aesthetically. Finally, Task 3 gave me the opportunity to create a font and continue my journey from Typography. All these tasks are connected to one another and the skills we learned can be carried forward. As challenging as this module was, I appreciate everything I learned and all the lessons from Mr. Vinod.
