REFLECTION
Experience
My journey with this module was a very positive and insightful
learning experience. There were a few ups and downs along the way,
especially at the beginning of the semester when I was not
familiar with the basics and terminology yet. However, I am glad I
got the chance to learn typography. All the assignments have led
me to gain an appreciation for the art of type and the importance
of attention to detail. Being able to create my own font was a
surreal experience; it was quite a process, but it was very
fulfilling and worth it in the end. This is the most enjoyable
module of the entire semester, the materials are well organized,
there are lots of feedback to improve my designs and I've gained
so much knowledge. Typography, and this module, definitely have a
lot of influence on me and my future designs.
Observations
Throughout the entire module, I observed that making progress
every week allows me to receive feedback from Mr. Vinod, and
improve upon my current design. Completing my work on time also
allows me to stay on schedule, and not rush the assignment at the
last minute. Furthermore, I observed that by listening to the
general and specific feedback provided by Mr. Vinod, I am able to
avoid making common silly mistakes and become more mindful of the
way I design. I have learned to observe that little details have a
significant influence on the outcome of the design. For example,
making a sharp edge or having it be a little curve will change the
character of the type. Vertical and horizontal lines in popular
fonts are not always symmetrical, and may instead have a slight
curve or are a little slanted.
Findings
Before this module, I used to think typography was about choosing
a typeface or arranging words into visually appealing
compositions. However, I realized typography was much more than
just that. I found that there is a substantial number of rules and
guidelines to follow when creating a good typeface, text
formatting, etc. Unlike regular painting and drawing, typography
cannot just look good when we think it is. If it does not follow
certain criteria, it will fall flat; if we do not pay attention to
the details and observe critically, we will make mistakes in our
design. For example, when we created our own typefaces, we needed
to understand the importance of proportions, illusions, scale,
etc, and the way we express a type conveys different meanings and
emotions. In terms of text formatting, good line spacing,
alignment, and kerning optimize the readability of text. Through
this module, I found that typography is so much more than just
arranging words and letters, instead, it is an art that requires
lots of details and attention.
